One word above all others sums up’ The Grind’ – Shit. The passage shape varies (slightly), but it is always shit. Some times it is low and grovely, other times it is narrow and thrutchy. Some times it is sharp and awkward, but none the less, it is always shit.

For those who haven’t heard of the grind, it lies in the wormway – the passage between the bottom of Echo Aven in Link Pot, and the 88′ pitch, in Lancaster Hole. It composes of approximately 800m of crawling to a small static sump, followed by exactly the same amount in the opposite direction, from whence you came.

The only thing which inspires you on to the end of such a place is the certainty, that once you’ve been to the end, you’ll never, ever have to go there again. Those people expecting some kind of reward at the finish will find only dissapointment – or more precisely a sump.

And if anybody fancies surveying this fine and intereting part of Easegill, they are advised to get in touch with Mr Ray Duffy at Bull Pot Farm.

George.
