Golly, but what a maze! Navigational interest abounds, and the trip would be impossible without the survey. And the compass was darn useful as well! Lucky it wasn’t left in the car, egh? We were confused for a bit, so let me give this advice for nowt:

  1. Take it easy.
  2. Keep an eye on the map.
  3. Trust not the markings.
  4. Stick together.
  5. People with maps lead, not the other way round.

Systematically is the way to go. Cracking trip though. Finally tweed caving occurred! Plenty of artifacts from the mining days lie around and the cathedral is large. Personal highlights were the cut stone blocks and The Pit; at the end of a tunnel with a test slot cut in the side of it, probing for the continuation of suitable rock. My only complaint is the quantity of rubbish and graffiti, sometimes even covering the miners’ calculations and drawings. Vandals! Oh, and the vibrations from trains passing through Brunell’s tunnel were a bit disturbing. Still, you’ve got to laugh. Got out in time to meet Zara’s train and get some good drinking in the Hunter’s Lodge. Job done.
