After finding the entrance (second time lucky), and a manly pose photo, we finally got down the concrete pipe shaft at 2pm. A brief low walk brought us to a distressing ‘category 2 restricted space’ sign, and a low crawl for quarter of an hour or so, the last third of which was wet. A large cavern with big boulders, water, and some very nice formations. A minor discrepancy between the guidebook and our perception of our surroundings led us to finally turn back after an awkward crawl through some rockfall led to a passage which was professionally determined to be ‘shit.’ Returning by a slightly different route, along a stream bed in a large cavern, we found a duck leading to a sump, some rocks that smelled of sulphur when you hit them with other rocks, finally getting back to the low crawl. On the way back up, the disadvantages of being a right lanky bugger returned in the form of not having room in the shaft to bring my feet up to the next rung, and thus frequently having to pull myself up by my arms. Oh, and Julia’s jelly came out of its packet while in her bag, which explained what everything else had smelled of when she’d been taking stuff out of her bag.
