Well what can I say; it’s a bloody long way down, rigged to a load of rusty ironwork…

You’d expect an 18” diameter iron tube to be a fairly rigid object, so seeing them swinging around like cables is also a little unnerving. Added to that, if the rope were to get twisted around one, it would stand a high chance of rubbing through as it bounced, and dragged against it. All in all, the shaft was somewhat intimidating and it was quite a relief to get to the bottom.

We spent some time in the lower levels, appreciating the various artefacts that can be seen and taking a few photos before heading back out. The way back up was just as scary as the descent, but added to this it’s physically pretty tough too; nearly 300’ straight up…
